Lessons Learned From My First Estate Sale

After finally making my first successful thrift store find last week, I managed to gain the courage to take the next step in my hunt for thrifty treasure: estate sales. Thanks to your helpful comments I realized that estate sales, especially in the Dallas area, are where I will probably find the best finds. So I started searching this site to check out what estate sales were happening in my area. Shock of all shocks there was a pretty sweet looking sale just down the road from where I work out in the mornings. Friday morning my mom and I set out to conquer our first estate sale with little no planning ahead of time. I expected to walk in, see maybe one decent cup or plate, and leave empty handed. When we got there at 9:30 a.m. (the sale opened at 9:00) cars lined the street and people were going in and out of the house. I had no idea it would be that crowded so early!

Lesson One: Get to the sale early. Maybe I missed something really awesome in the first 30 minutes. I guess I'll never know...haha.
My mom and I split up when we got inside to cover more ground. The house was really small but knick knacks lined every shelf and surface. I found this cute Glasbake dish (not Pyrex, but still awesome!) in the kitchen and nearly broke it I grabbed it so hard. I'm still getting used to the "vintage high". Haha.

Lesson Two: Calm down. Don't almost brake awesome tulip covered dishes out of excitement! What good would that do? ;)
After finding the dish I turned around to see these flower cups all in a row behind me. I started looking them over, one arm still clutching the tulip dish, when one of the sellers asked me if I wanted a bag for the cups. I wasn't sure if I wanted them yet but I said ok and she started placing them in a plastic bag. Thankfully I did want the cups but I didn't really speak up when I should have said, "Not yet, I'm still thinking about it, thank you!"

Lesson Three: Speak up! I never want to walk out with something I don't love 100%.
With my arms practically full, I made my way through the rooms. One room was dedicated entirely to Christmas decorations and Christmas related dolls, giving me the heebie-jeebies and resulting in a quick exit. The garage had piles of great stuff including this beautiful copper coffee set. I saw it tucked away in a corner and I knew who was taking it home. But guess what? I didn't have any hands left to pick it up! So I just stood there hovering with my hands full of cups and dishes wishing for some sort of device that held things...oh yeah...a bag.

Lesson Four: Bring a bag!! I even saw this tip on several of vintage shopping posts. Sheesh. Thankfully my mom came out to the garage with her hands full of her own treasures, laughed at me guarding my copper coffee pot, and came back to help me.

All in all it was a great experience. Now that I have my first estate sale under my belt I am ready to tackle another. It really is a lot of fun!

Have you been to an estate sale before? What happened on your first trip?

  1. Oh gosh, I LOVE estate sales! My first estate sale is still my best. It was right around the corner from my Mum's house, and my borther and I stopped in just to check it out. Turns out the owner had run a clothing store in Montreal in the 60s and 70s and had TONS of unworn overstock jammed into all of their closets. I only bought a couple things, but I wish I could go back in time and make me buy more! Everything was a dollar. For $20 we left with knick knacks, a yellow cabinet I still have in my bedroom, some clothes, records... man, we cleaned up!!

  7. I first heard about estate sales about three years ago. I'd love to go to one but they're just not done here in England.

  8. Wow great finds! I love the copper coffee pots and flowered cups! The last estate sale I went to we found a blue and white polka dotted scarf, a big brass bracelet, two smaller ones, a really neat beaded belt, and a neat necklace! I really like estate sales because the jewelry is usually a higher quality made 20+ years ago rather than the stuff we have now that turns your arm and fingers green! Lower prices too!

  10. We go to estate sells every weekend, they are one of my favourite things to go and we find some great bargains.

I'd recommend using this website too - www.estatesales.net here in Detroit where estate sales have grown more then anywhere else in the US in the last year, ALL the major estate sale companies use it to advertise the forthcoming sales so I would assume they would do the same in your state.

Also while it's great getting there early, that's when most people hit it and you can get even better bargains on the last afternoon of the sales when they are trying to get rid of what's left.

  11. The only estate sale I went to was from a person who evidently collected all things clown. Dolls, mannequins, plates, masks, videos, you name it. To this day, I still have nightmares.

    1. I used this site: 24-7estatesales.com. Rachael, in the comments above, recommended this site too: www.estatesales.net

I'm still very new at this but I'm sure one of these sites can help you find one in your area! You could also check your local newspaper for estate sale listings.

  14. Estate sales are some of my favorites! I've got some really good things at them before, although what exactly those things were escapes my mind at the moment. Lol!n :D Congrats on such great finds!

  16. I've been reading your blog for a while now, and I'm really enjoying it! Especially since it makes me feel so much at home. We don't have estate sales here in England - none that I can find anyway. House clearances all end up at flea markets or auctions, thus increasing the prices. Hrmph! Thanks for sharing your tips. And thanks for the lovely blog!

  18. I love all of your finds!! That dish is esp. pretty!!
The few times I have been to an estate sale the owners have been nice enough to offer me a bag/box for my finds. I always mean to bring a bag, but I just forget!!

  19. I love great finds! I have never been to an estate sale as an adult but I use to go with my mom when I was little! I definitely need to start going again!

  20. This post made me laugh a little because it's all SO TRUE! I went to my first estate sale a few years ago and did some similar things (didn't speak up, no bags, etc). Luckily, I ended up with a small decorative dish and a neat sketch of a 1920's woman. Love your finds though! Super cute!

  22. I went to my first estate sale back in the beginning of summer, and I thought it was wonderful! I walked away with tons of old crochet patterns, a Kodak Instamatic camera, and a typewriter table. And my mom finally had her dream come true and found a gorgeous mid-century entertainment center. Luckily for us, we live in a tiny town and this house was out in the country, so there weren't too many people at it.
But, no many how many wonderful things I may find at an estate sale, I do always still find it a little unnerving to be in the home of someone who just passed away. I felt a tiny bit like I was intruding, but I also tried to keep in mind that this person probably would like to see their most beloved possessions being loved by someone else rather than forgotten.
    Happy estate sale hunting!

  23. Sounds amazing, but I don't think we have estate sales in the UK - there are house clearances though, which might be the same thing, but I don't know if they are open to the public.
